My New York Playlist, OR Tracks That Remind Me Inescapably of the City

Since it’s now been three months since I left New York after a summer-long stay, I feel like all that temporal distance will make this post highly accurate.

Here are six songs that will always remind me of New York City — of taking the subway on sweltering nights, of fireworks on the Hudson, of Washington Square Park at dusk, of crafts fairs in the Bowery, of street performers in Midtown, of walks on the High Line, of a solitary afternoon in Central Park, of shopping with friends in Soho, and of the feeling of being one tiny, moving speck in a sea of thousands.

My reasons for choosing these songs vary. Some fit lyrics-wise, some fit sound-wise. And some I just happened to be listening to in New York at a memorable moment.

In no particular order:

The Bravery – “Believe”

– – – – –

Of Monsters and Men – “Six Weeks”

– – – – –

Two Door Cinema Club – “Sleep Alone”

– – – – –

Photographic interlude! Fifth Avenue near Central Park, June 2012.

– – – – –

IAMX – “I Am Terrified”

– – – – –

Imagine Dragons – “Radioactive”

– – – – –

Grouplove – “Tongue Tied”
